Orthodontics is the process of aligning teeth. It also involves treating crossbites, improper bites, spacing issues, crowding, and impacted teeth. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, between 50% to 75% of people can benefit from orthodontic treatments. Depending on the natural alignment of your teeth, an orthodontist will advise you on the best treatment option for any issues found. Typically, orthodontists use one of the following treatments to create beautifully aligned teeth.

Braces

Braces are an affordable and effective way to correct alignment issues. The color options make them more fun to wear for teenagers. The following types of braces are common orthodontic treatments.

Traditional Metal Braces

This is the most common and least expensive braces option. Metal brackets and wires are attached to the teeth to gently and gradually force the teeth to move into alignment. Different colored bands are now available, making them more fun and fashionable to wear.

Ceramic Braces

Similar to metal braces and just as effective, these braces use ceramic brackets that blend in with the color of the teeth, so they are less noticeable.

Lingual Braces

These braces are attached to the inner side of the teeth, so they are unseen from the outside. Lingual braces can sometimes be uncomfortable as the tongue will be in constant contact with the braces.

Self-Ligating Braces

These braces look like metal braces but do not use bands to hold the wire in place. It is easier to keep your teeth clean and maintain dental hygiene with these braces.

Invisalign

These are removable clear aligners that are worn over the teeth. Each set is specially made to fit comfortably and precisely over the teeth and is worn for 2-3 weeks and then replaced with another set. They need to be worn constantly to be effective. They are removed only for meals, brushing, and flossing. These are comfortable and a popular option with adults.
Headgear

A kind of treatment to correct the back teeth. It can be worn only in the evenings and at night as it can restrict the patient from doing other tasks.

Retainers

These are used to hold the teeth in place after the teeth have been straightened. They are essential to the alignment process.
