How to Help Your Child Adjust to their Metal Braces
12/7/2021
Braces are a big adjustment for any child and can be especially hard if they’re not used to wearing anything on their teeth. It’s important to remind them that this feeling is just temporary and will soon become the norm. You can do plenty of things to make it easier for your little one. Here are a few things to help your child adjust to their new metal braces.
1. Take Time to Explain the Process
Just as it’s important for your child to understand why they’re getting braces, it’s also helpful for them to know what’s going on with their teeth. While you likely do not have an expert understanding of what’s going on inside their mouths, there are several simple diagrams and models you can use to explain what’s happening.
3. Help Them with the Cleaning Process
It’s going to be important for your child to brush and floss every day, as well as to keep their metal braces clean. This is especially true before they go to bed at night. While you can teach your child how to do this themselves, it’s helpful for them to have a parent or other caregiver supervise the process until they get used to doing it on their own.
4. Encourage Eating Healthy Foods
Your child needs to have a nutritious diet, but it will be especially true while they have their braces on. Be sure that they avoid foods that are too chewy, sticky, or hard. To keep their teeth and braces in the best condition possible, their teeth need to be free of sugars and acids that can corrode the metal. At the same time, you shouldn’t allow your child to eat too many sweets, which can compromise the health of their teeth overall.
5. Help Your Child Understand What to Expect
They may have mixed feelings about getting metal braces, but it’s important to remember that the process of having them put on will be worth it in the long run. Have your child listen carefully while explaining what they can expect when they get their braces. It never hurts for children to feel confident and positive about new situations.
In the United States, 3.9 million children are orthodontic patients. If you’ve been thinking about getting your child metal braces, you should know that the process can be challenging for them as well as you. You’ll need to have patience and stay positive throughout the entire process. However, by taking a few simple steps, you can help make things a little easier for both of you.
