It’s important that you feel secure in your smile, not just for cosmetic purposes, but practical ones as well. Misaligned teeth can result in bite issues and jaw pain and feeling insecure about your smile can lead to diminished confidence and increased shyness. Fortunately, there are plenty of orthodontic treatments available that can improve your smile over time. Read on for some of the best orthodontic treatments available for improving your smile.

1. Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces are obviously among some of the most well-known orthodontic treatments available. Typically, metal braces are used to correct dental misalignments, though they’re sometimes also used to help treat issues like genetically missing teeth. Typically, an individual will wear braces for about two years, but in some cases, people wear them for longer or shorter periods of time.

2. Removable Retainers

While metal braces typically need to be adjusted every few months by orthodontists, removable retainers are a bit less involved. They are usually put in place to ensure that teeth stay straight after the application of braces. Teeth can revert to their original form without retainers. They essentially act as a support system for the initial treatment.

3. Palatal Expander

This device is removable, and it’s typically used to expand the upper jaw. Bite issues often have to do with jaw problems. While surgery is sometimes necessary to correct these issues, less involved orthodontic treatments are effective in many cases.

4. Invisalign Braces

Invisalign braces offer the same results as traditional metal braces. However, they are also nearly invisible and removeable. These braces are not adjusted in the same way that traditional metal braces are. Rather, adjusted aligners will be periodically introduced to gradually move your smile into the desired position. Invisalign braces must be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day, though they should be taken off when you’re eating or drinking anything other than water. In many cases, people prefer these clear braces to traditional braces.
